Rights and Demands of Environmental Defenders in Oreovec, Prilep

Yesterday they express thier demend again. The environmental defenders are making several urgent demands to protect their environment and community:

Halt Destructive Activities: An immediate cessation of all activities by Bechtel and Enka that are causing environmental harm, including the illegal extraction of marble and other destructive practices.

Environmental Impact Assessment: A comprehensive and independent EIA must be conducted.

Restoration of Damaged Areas: The consortium must take responsibility for restoring any areas that have already been damaged.

Community Compensation: The local community should be compensated for any losses incurred due to the consortium’s activities. This compensation should address economic, social, and environmental damages.

Legal Accountability: Ensuring that any violations of environmental laws and regulations by Bechtel and Enka are met with appropriate legal action.
Sustainable Development Practices: Future development in the region must prioritize sustainability and community welfare.

It is very important to underline the Rights of Environmental Defenders and @UNSpecialrepporteur Michel FORST to be informed about this.

They have the right to: Participation in Decision-Making: Local communities must be meaningfully involved in all decisions that affect their environment. Access to Information: The defenders have the right to access all information related to environmental impacts, project plans, and any agreements between the government and the consortium.

Freedom of Speech and Assembly: The defenders must be able to freely express their concerns and organize peaceful protests without fear of reprisal, under both national and international law.

Protection from Harm: Given the rising threats against environmental activists globally, it is imperative that the defenders in Oreovec are safeguarded from any form of intimidation, harassment, or violence.

The struggle in Oreovec is a microcosm of a larger battle for environmental justice in North Macedonia. The defenders’ fight is not only about protecting their village but also about setting a precedent for responsible and inclusive development throughout the country. Their courage and resilience are a testament to the enduring human spirit and a clarion call for justice in the face of corporate greed and environmental exploitation.
